In Rugrats

Spike is Tommy's best "animal" friend. The dog is currently married to Fifi, a purple-and-white poodle. He often plays with Tommy and is usually seen inside or near the Pickles' house. Spike has helped the Rugrats through more adventures than he can count. Spike watches over the babies more closely than Stu, Didi or Lou. He is always willing to get his paws in the action when it comes to adventures. The character is considered a main character in the series, appearing in almost three quarters of all of the episodes, though he usually does not come along when the Rugrats venture to new locations. As shown in The Rugrats Movie and Rugrats Go Wild, Spike is very protective of the babies, as he sees them as his own. Like most dogs, Spike is a friendly, loyal mutt whose main interest is food and his wife Fifi. Stu and Didi consider him a dumb, but pleasant member of the family. When he's not rescuing Tommy from impending doom, Spike often takes the babies on magnificent adventures through the neighborhood which Stu and Didi are never aware of.

Appearance

Spike is mostly an orange-brown colour. He has two grey spots on his body and wears a red collar with a gold tag. Though in every episode of Rugrats he appears in, his collar tag is blank, a Spike plush toy distributed in 1993 features the word "Spike" on his tag. The dog has long ears and white eyes with black pupils. His nose is colored a dark purple colour in early episodes though is brown in later episodes.

In the Rugrats films

For the beginning and middle of the movie, Spike was used by Angelica as a bloodhound when she tried to retrieve her doll, Cynthia, from Tommy's new brother, Dil. He plays a much larger role at the end when he saves the babies from a wolf, Scar Snout, who tries to eat them, but falls in a large lake below along with the wolf, causing the babies to cry. When Tommy finds the "wizard" (who is actually Stu) he looks for throughout the film, rather than asking the wizard to get him and his friends home, he wishes for his dog back. Stu then falls and saves Spike.

Spike plays a small role in this film. He is only shown briefly throughout the entire movie (though the credits feature many images of him) with Fifi, a purple-and-white poodle he meets and later mates with. Spike appears at the end of the movie as well, at the wedding.

In the third movie, Spike plays a larger role than in any other film. He is voiced by Bruce Willis when talking to Eliza Thornberry (the main character of The Wild Thornberrys who is able to talk to animals like him) and ends up saving the day at the end of the movie as well.

In All Grown Up!

Role

Unlike in Rugrats, Spike acts as a recurring character in All Grown Up! (rather than a main character). In the series, he rarely ever appears as a main subject of episodes though does often appear as a cameo in the Pickles' house.

Personality

Spike has visually gained weight, walks much slower, and has obviously grown much older. The same occurs with his mate Fifi. Spike is still loved by Tommy, Dil, Didi and Stu, though they are shown to have to get him to move more as he sleeps much more than he did in Rugrats. He loves to dig and eat.
